The Background

Springwood Primary School is a specialist primary school based in Swinton, Salford which provides specialist care and education for children with challenging needs. Springwood School was previously using traditional Cat 2 recessed fluorescent lighting in their halls, corridors, classrooms and recessed CFL down-lighters in the receptions and offices. This lighting was costing the school over £7,000 a year to run and had a annual high maintenance cost.

The Solution

Perfect Sense Energy designed a lighting scheme that used modern LED flat recessed panels to replace the old fluorescent lighting. The lux levels were improved by approx 65% and allowed the school to half their yearly energy costs. The school was also due to upgrade their failed battery packs, but found it was much more cost effective to integrate the emergency backup lighting with newly installed LED panels. The project has an estimated payback time of less than 3 years along with a 5 year warranty on all lights and an expected lifetime of 50,000 hours.

The Results & Feedback

The new LED lighting installation has allowed the school to save huge amounts of money on energy and maintenance costs compared to their old lighting. This lighting was also beneficial as some of the children that attend the school that have hypersensitivity and some have visual impairments, so LED lighting was able to help make a more comfortable learning environment. The staff at the school say there has been a noticeable improvement and that the lighting allows for a better educational environment to work in.
