The Background

Under Cover Rock is an indoor climbing centre located in a converted church in Bristol. The colour coded hold routes mean good lighting is essential to enable the climbers to easily see the colours, even in their peripheral vision. The site had fluorescent lighting, but the lighting levels werenít optimal meaning climbers could not easily see the routes. The traditional lighting also had a high maintenance cost and a lot of work had to be put in to maintain the lights due to the restricted access around the climbing area.

The Solution

Perfect Sense Energy designed an LED lighting scheme that used modern IP65 luminaires, which stop atmospheric moisture or chalk dust entering the fixture. A number of units were installed at varying heights to suit the different areas of the climbing walls. The LEDs gave an energy saving of over 50% and significantly raised the lighting levels. This improved climbers visibility and helped to showcase the large climbing walls with bright, fresh looking lighting.

The Results & Feedback

Thanks to the newly installed LED lights, Under Cover Rock, have more than halved their lighting energy costs whilst having lights that create a vibrant and striking atmosphere for the climbing facilities. The newly positioned lights also reduce shadowing and they have eliminated the need for difficult and expensive lighting maintenance work for at least 50,000 hours of operation.
